Horror 1
Not a horror story, but when we moved in here the day was a bit of a mare.
Removal men arrived at 9am and the van was packed up and ready to go by 10.30. Got the call at 11 saying that we’d got our buyers money and our money had got to the people we were buying from so ready to go by 12. We got to the agents at 1 ish and they said they hadnt got the keys yet. They phoned the vendors who hadnt even started packing and said they’d be AT LEAST 2-3 hours. Apparently, the house they were buying was the problem. It had been empty since March (this was in Sept) when the old boy living there died. They went round at 10ish to see if they could start moving stuff in and the family of the deceased bloke were having a farewell party for the house. The place was full of people suited up with a buffet in the middle of the living room. I mean, could they not have done it the day before???? Bear in mind, I was 13 weeks pregnant at the time and not feeling great anyway. We ended up getting in here about 5pm after being ready since 11am. Horror 2
When we came to move in to our new house the previous owners were still there and hadn’t moved anything! We had to store all our stuff in the garage and wait for them to move their stuff. We spent the next day moving furniture etc from the garage into the house. They hadn’t boxed up a thing! We’d been living out of boxes for a week to make sure that we would be out of our house on time. It was pandemonium.
In a way though, it was a blessing. The house was so filthy it was unbelievable so at least I had the chance to give it a good clean bafore we moved our stuff in. We had another problem in that we were due to pick our new car up the day after we moved and we were using some of the proceeds from our old house to buy it. The solicitors cocked up and kept £5k of our money and it was a nightmare running around trying to get it sorted – especially as it was a Saturday (we moved on a Friday) and the Solicitors and Banks were only open until 12! Horror 3
I have quite a few, but I am an Estate Agent, so I see horror stories all the time unfortunately, but a couple of random ones..
.. the bank miskeying in the solicitors account numbers so money goes missing in the middle of a chain and people don’t complete when they’re meant to – happens far more often then people realise… ..the punch up that happened outside our office (highly entertaining) when a couple moving out of their flat, using only a small car to transport their stuff, were somewhat surprised when the new owners were getting upset and tetchy when they still weren’t even close to having moved out by 5.30pm (having completed at 12) – they couldn’t quite grasp the fact that they didn’t own the property anymore and had no right to be there, cue wound up people and fraying tempers… |
