Hand over the packing

Why People Hand Their Packing To A Crew

Packing takes far longer than most people expect. A family home can fill well over a hundred boxes, and each one needs wrapping, filling, taping and labelling. Done in the evenings after work, it drags on for weeks. Our packing service in Manchester does it in a fraction of the time, because packing is what our crew does every working day.

There is a second reason too. Most breakages on a move come from how a box was packed, not from how it was carried. Plates packed flat, loose glasses and half-empty boxes are the usual problems. Our team packs plates on their edge, wraps each glass and fills every gap, so nothing moves inside the box.

  • Boxes, paper, tape and wrap brought to your door
  • Each plate and glass wrapped in clean paper
  • Every box labelled with its new room
  • Full house, a few rooms or just the fragile items

CMR Relocation has packed homes across Greater Manchester and Cheshire since 2011. Packing works best as part of our house removals service, but you can book it for any move we carry out.

How it works

How Our Packing Day Works, Step By Step

Packing usually happens the day before the move, or over a few days for a large house. We agree the timing when we quote.

  1. 1

    We Look Round

We see your home in person or from your photos, and count what needs packing and what is fragile.

  2. 2

    You Set Aside Essentials

You keep back valuables, papers, medicines and a first-night bag, so nothing you need gets packed.

  3. 3

    We Pack Room By Room

Our crew finishes one room before starting the next. Heavy items go in small boxes, light items in big ones.

  4. 4

We Label For The New Home

Each box is marked with its new room, so it is set down in the right place on moving day.

Fragile items

How We Pack China, Glass And Pictures

The kitchen is the hardest room in any house. It holds the most fragile things and the most odd shapes. It is also the room people most often ask us to pack.

Plates are wrapped one at a time and stood on their edge, like records in a rack. A plate on its edge is far stronger than one lying flat. Cups and bowls are wrapped and packed upright and tight. Glasses get extra paper, and stemmed glasses are wrapped at the stem first. Any gap is filled with scrunched paper so nothing can rattle.

Pictures and mirrors are wrapped and stood upright, never laid flat under other things. Lamps travel with their shades packed apart. Valuable glassware can go in a lidded plastic crate, which is stiffer than a cardboard box.

If you would like to pack some of it yourself, our packing tips for moving house show the same methods step by step.

Your part and ours

Your Jobs And Our Jobs Before Packing Day

Packing goes faster when the house is ready. These are the few things we ask of you.

Clear Out First

Sell, give away or bin what you do not want before we arrive. Packing things you will throw away costs time.

Keep Valuables With You

Passports, keys, jewellery and bank papers travel with you, not in a box.

Tell Us The New Rooms

Let us know which room is which at the new house, so labels match the layout.

Leave The Rest To Us

We bring the materials, then pack, label and load every box.

Labels that work

Labelling Every Box For Its New Room

A well-packed box is no use if it lands in the wrong room. Every box we pack is labelled with the room it is going to at your new home. Our label cards can also show which wall a piece of furniture sits against.

On moving day the crew reads the label and carries the box straight to that room. You do not have to stand at the door directing traffic. When the van is empty, the kitchen boxes are in the kitchen and the bedroom boxes are upstairs.

Taking furniture apart comes with our packing service. Beds and wardrobes that need to come apart are dismantled on the day, their fixings bagged and taped to the frame. They are rebuilt at the other end, so you can sleep in your own bed on the first night.

Living in a packed house

Getting Through The Night Before The Move In A Packed Home

If we pack the day before, you will spend one evening among the boxes. A little planning makes it easy.

Tell us which things you still need that night, and we will leave them out. Most people keep the kettle, a few mugs, a pan, the bedding they are sleeping in and the children's favourite toys. Those go into one last box in the morning. We mark it clearly, load it near the back door of the lorry and set it down first at your new home.

Keep the fridge until the morning too. Empty it, defrost the freezer the day before and leave a towel under it. A freezer that is still dripping can soak the boxes around it on the lorry.

Pets and children are easier to manage away from the house on packing day and moving day. If you can, ask a friend or family member to look after them. It keeps them safe, and the crew can move freely through open doors.

Finally, check every cupboard, loft hatch and garden shed once we have finished. We look too, but you know your home best. Anything we miss can be packed while the lorry is still outside.

Pricing

What Decides The Price Of A Packing Job

Every packing service in Manchester we quote is priced on its own, and the quote is free. These are the main things that change it.

FactorWhy it matters
How much you ownMore boxes means more materials and more hours.
Full pack or part packYou only pay for the rooms we pack.
Fragile itemsChina, glass and art take longer to wrap than books or clothes.
Odd shapesLamps, mirrors and large pictures need extra wrapping.
TimingA big house may need two days of packing before the move.

Avoiding problems

Packing Mistakes That Break Things, And How We Avoid Them

Boxes Too Heavy

A big box of books cannot be lifted safely and often splits. We put heavy things in small boxes.

Gaps Inside The Box

Loose contents shift and crack. We fill every gap with paper before the lid goes on.

Lost Essentials

Kettle, mugs and chargers go in one marked box that is loaded last and opened first.

Unlabelled Boxes

Nothing leaves without a room label, so nothing sits in the hall for weeks.

FAQs

Having Your Home Packed: Common Questions

Something else on your mind about this service? Ring the depot and ask.

Can you pack only the fragile things?

Yes. Many people pack books, clothes and toys themselves and leave the kitchen, glass, pictures and mirrors to us. We price a part pack on what we are packing, so you only pay for the rooms or items you hand over.

Do I need to buy boxes before you arrive?

No. Our crew brings the boxes, packing paper, tape and wrapping needed for the job you have booked. If you are doing some of the packing yourself, tell us when you book and we can drop materials off first.

What should I keep back and pack myself?

Keep passports, house keys, bank papers, medicines, jewellery, chargers and anything you need on the first night. Put them in a bag that travels with you, not on the lorry.

Will you pack things that are going into storage?

Yes. Items heading for storage are packed in the same way and labelled so you can find them later. Our storage is at our Broadheath depot, in sealed containers, with no minimum term.

Do you take apart beds and wardrobes as well?

Yes, it is part of our packing service, and we list each piece on your quote. Beds and wardrobes that need to come apart are dismantled on moving day, the fixings bagged and labelled, and rebuilt at your new home so you can sleep in your own bed that night.
