Removals In Chorlton-cum-Hardy
Removals in Chorlton often mean an upstairs flat in a converted Victorian house, a terrace with a steep staircase, or a shared house where everyone moves on the same day. Our crew plans for all three.
South Manchester
Chorlton's Terraces, Conversions And Long-Time Locals
Chorlton-cum-Hardy is a south Manchester suburb about four miles from the city centre. It is best known for Beech Road, its independent shops and cafés, and its closeness to the Mersey. Most of it is in the M21 postcode.
The homes are mainly Victorian and Edwardian terraces and semis. Many of the larger ones were split into flats years ago. That gives Chorlton a real mix of people: sharers and renters in the flats, couples buying their first terrace, and families who arrived young and never left.
Because of that mix, removals in Chorlton range from a single room to a five-bedroom semi. A lot of them happen on the same few days at the end of each month, when tenancies end. If your date is fixed by a tenancy, book early so you get the slot you need.
Flats and house shares
Moving Out Of A Converted Flat Or Shared House
Moves from split-up Victorian houses have their own quirks. These are the ones we plan for most in Chorlton.
Shared hallways
Other residents still need to get in and out. We keep the hall clear and protect walls and banisters with blankets.
Several people, one van
When housemates leave together, we label each person's things and drop them at different addresses in one trip.
Tenancy deadlines
Keys are often due back by noon. We plan the order of the day so the old flat is empty and swept in time.
Deposit-friendly care
Runners on carpets and film on stairs help avoid the scuffs and marks that come up at check-out.
Landlords and letting agents usually want the flat left empty and clean. So we load in an order that leaves the bathroom and kitchen till last, and we can take away flat-pack furniture you no longer want. If you are moving in rather than out, check the inventory before we carry anything in. Photos of existing marks on walls and floors save arguments later.
End-of-month dates fill up first in Chorlton. If your tenancy ends on the last Friday of the month, book your removal in Chorlton early, ideally as soon as you give notice. A mid-week date, if your landlord allows it, is often easier for everyone and the streets are quieter too.
Around M21
Beech Road, Chorlton Park And The Streets Between
Beech Road and Chorlton Green. This is the old village heart, with tight streets of terraces and small cottages near the green. Roads are narrow and cars park on both sides. The lorry may have to stop at the end of the street, so we bring an extra pair of hands for the carry.
Around Wilbraham Road and Barlow Moor Road. The main shopping streets, with flats above shops and larger houses turned into apartments. Traffic is steady all day, and stopping on the main road is not always allowed.
Chorlton Park and the south. Quieter roads of semis and some 1930s houses, many with drives. These are usually the easiest homes to load in Chorlton.
Towards Hardy Lane and the Mersey. Family homes close to Chorlton Water Park and the meadows. Gardens and garages here mean bikes, kayaks and tools to pack as well.
Council rules
Parking A Removal Van In Chorlton: Manchester Council Rules
Chorlton sits right on the edge of Trafford, but it is in the Manchester City Council area. That catches people out, because the rules differ from Stretford or Sale next door.
Manchester City Council offers two options. If the space outside is a pay and display bay, the council can suspend it for a domestic removal, so our lorry has a clear spot. If your door is on single or double yellow lines, it can issue a dispensation instead: a certificate for a named vehicle, shown in the windscreen, for a set place and time.
Either way, the council needs at least five working days' notice. We tell you on the survey which one fits your street, and what details to give. On many terraced side streets neither is needed, but space is tight, so we may suggest a note to neighbours.
Getting here
Trams And The Short Drive To Chorlton
Chorlton has three Metrolink stops: Chorlton, Barlow Moor Road and St Werburgh's Road. Trams on the airport line and the East Didsbury line both run through, so the city centre is about fifteen minutes away. Cyclists have the Fallowfield Loop and the Mersey paths.
Our depot is in Broadheath, Altrincham, about 7.6 km away in a straight line. We usually come up the A56 to Stretford and across on Edge Lane. Mornings can be slow on Barlow Moor Road, so we set off early to be with you on time.
For green space, Chorlton Water Park, Chorlton Ees and the Mersey meadows are on the doorstep. Chorlton Park and Beech Road Park are good for a break while the house is being packed.
Schools are a big reason families stay. There are well-liked primary schools across Chorlton and a choice of high schools close by. The local figures further down give house prices and school results for the whole Manchester council area, which covers a wide range of places.
First fortnight
Your First Two Weeks In M21: Bins, Council Tax And A GP
Once the boxes are in, a few local jobs are worth doing early. In Chorlton they all go through Manchester City Council or the NHS.
Learn the four bins. Manchester uses a grey bin for general waste and a blue bin for paper and card. The brown bin takes glass, cans and hard plastic pots and bottles. The green bin is for food and garden waste. A flat in a converted house may share bins with the other flats, so ask the landlord or agent which ones are yours. The council's website shows your collection day by postcode.
Move your council tax. Tell Manchester City Council the date you moved in, and tell your old council the date you left. If you are renting a room in a shared house, check who pays: sometimes the landlord does.
Join a GP practice. You can register online or at the surgery. The NHS says you do not need proof of address or ID to register, so you can do it before the first bill arrives.
Get on the electoral register. It takes a few minutes at gov.uk and it helps with credit checks if you are buying later.

FAQs
Moving In Chorlton: Answers Before You Book
Moving in or around Chorlton? Ask us anything about the move.
Is Chorlton in Manchester or Trafford for parking permits?
Chorlton is in the Manchester City Council area, even though it borders Trafford. So a parking suspension or a dispensation for the removal lorry comes from Manchester City Council, which asks for at least five working days' notice. Stretford and Sale, just next door, are Trafford and have different rules.
Can you move just one room from a shared house in Chorlton?
Yes. Many Chorlton moves are one person leaving a shared house or a couple leaving a flat. A smaller move still gets floor protection and proper wrapping. Tell us what you are taking and we will size the crew and vehicle to match.
My flat is on the top floor of a converted house. Is that a problem?
Not at all, but we need to know. Top-floor conversions often have narrow, winding stairs and low ceilings on the last flight. We check on the survey, plan how each big piece goes down, and send enough people to carry safely. With our packing service, we take furniture apart where needed.
Can you store our things if our Chorlton rental ends before we buy?
Yes. That gap between a tenancy ending and a purchase completing is very common. We load your things into a sealed container at our Broadheath depot and deliver them to the new home when you are ready. Most people book at least a month.
Where do people move to after Chorlton?
Many stay close. Families who outgrow a terrace often look at Sale, Stretford, Urmston or Didsbury for a bigger house. We move people between all of these, as well as further afield.
We are moving into a Chorlton flat with no parking outside. How long does the carry take?
It depends on the distance from the lorry to your door and the number of stairs. On a narrow terrace street we may stop at the end of the road. We work that out on the survey and send enough people, so the carry does not slow the whole day down.
