Northwich, CW8 and CW9

The Salt Town Down The A556 From Altrincham

Northwich is about 18 km south-west of our yard in Broadheath. The lorry heads down the A56 and the A556 through the Cheshire countryside and comes into the town from the north. It is roughly 15 miles by road, so the crew can be loading at your door early and finish the move the same day.

Northwich and Altrincham also share a railway. The Mid-Cheshire line runs from Chester through Greenbank and Northwich, then Knutsford, Hale and Altrincham, on to Stockport and Manchester Piccadilly. The train from Northwich to Altrincham takes under half an hour, and to Piccadilly just under an hour. Hartford station, on the main line, adds trains towards Liverpool and Crewe.

Removals in Northwich take in the town itself and the villages around it: Hartford, Davenham, Moulton, Barnton, Rudheath, Leftwich and the newer Kingsmead and Winnington Village. Each one is a little different, and we plan around your street.

Built on salt

Why Northwich Town Centre Looks Like Nowhere Else In Cheshire

Northwich grew rich on salt. Pumping brine out of the ground weakened the old mines underneath, and as they collapsed, parts of the town sank. That is why so many of the town-centre buildings are black-and-white and timber-framed: a light frame could be jacked up and levelled again when the ground moved, which brick could not.

For anyone moving into a period house or a flat in the centre, that history shows up in small ways:

  • Old buildings with uneven floors and doors that do not quite line up
  • Flats above shops on Witton Street and the streets off it, reached by narrow stairs
  • Pedestrian areas where the lorry must stop on the edge and the crew carries in
  • Loading times set by the shops, so early starts are often best

We look at all of this before the day. Where the carry is long, we send more people rather than rush it.

Homes around the town

From Victorian Streets To Winnington Village

The town centre

Timber-framed buildings, Victorian terraces and flats above shops. Tight access and limited parking at the door.

Hartford and Davenham

Established villages with larger family houses and gardens. Good access, and usually a full lorry load.

Kingsmead and Winnington Village

Kingsmead was built from the late 1990s. Winnington Village is going up on former Brunner Mond works land, with hundreds of new homes.

Barnton, Rudheath and the villages

Terraces, semis and bungalows, plus homes on country lanes towards Great Budworth and Comberbach.

New estates

Moving Into A New-Build Home Around Northwich

A lot of the people we move in Northwich are heading for a new-build house. Winnington Village is being built on about 90 acres where Brunner Mond's chemical works once stood, with plans for well over a thousand homes, a school and a park. Kingsmead, between Leftwich and Davenham, went up between the late 1990s and the mid-2000s.

New-build moves have their own snags. Roads and pavements may still be unfinished, site traffic can block the way in, and completion dates often slip. We check the latest with you and the builder in the week before. If the keys are late, our container storage in Broadheath holds everything until you can get in, with no minimum term.

Moving into an empty new house is also the best time to do it properly. If your quote includes it, our crew takes beds and wardrobes apart at the old house and builds them in the new rooms before we leave.

Cheshire West and Chester rules

Parking And Flood Checks For A Northwich Move

Most homes outside the town centre have a drive or a quiet road, and the lorry can park without any permission. In the centre and on busy roads, Cheshire West and Chester Council runs a dispensation permit for vehicles that need to stand where parking is restricted. It is applied for online, and the council warns against parking before it is approved. If the bays have to be kept completely empty for the lorry, the council needs a temporary traffic order instead, which takes longer.

Water is the other thing to plan for. Northwich sits where the River Weaver meets the River Dane, and the town centre has flooded several times over the years, including in 2019. New defences were finished in 2017, and big floods are rare, but after heavy rain we check the roads in before we set off.

Life in the Weaver valley

Why People Choose Northwich

Northwich gives you a lot of green space for a town of its size. The Northwich Woodlands cover about 350 hectares of old salt workings turned back into countryside, including Marbury Country Park beside Budworth Mere. The Anderton Boat Lift, built in 1875 to raise boats between the River Weaver and the Trent and Mersey Canal, is a day out on the doorstep, and the Lion Salt Works museum tells the story of the town's industry.

The town centre has been rebuilt too, with the Barons Quay development by the river bringing a cinema, shops and restaurants. Add the rail link to Manchester and the quick road to the M6 and M56, and it is easy to see why families move here from the city and from closer-in towns like Altrincham and Sale.

School places are applied for through Cheshire West and Chester Council. If you are moving with children, check the dates early, as they differ from the Greater Manchester councils.

How we work

What To Expect From CMR Relocation On A Northwich Move

On the day the crew lays floor protection, wraps the furniture in blankets and loads the lorry in the order the new house needs it. If you would like help with the boxes, our packing service can pack the house the day before. Our piano movers take care of uprights and grands, and our business moves team handles shops and offices out of hours.

CMR Relocation has moved homes since 2011 and holds goods vehicle operator licence OC1109721. Darrin and the team are on 0161 478 3639, Monday to Saturday, 8:30am to 5:30pm. FAQs

Northwich Removals: Questions Before You Book

Moving in or around Northwich? Ask us anything about the move.

How far is Northwich from your depot?

About 18 km in a straight line from our depot in Broadheath, Altrincham, or roughly 15 miles by road down the A556. In normal traffic the lorry reaches the town centre in well under an hour.

Who do we ask about parking for the lorry?

Cheshire West and Chester Council. If the lorry needs to stand where parking is restricted, the council runs a dispensation permit, applied for online. If the bays must be kept completely clear, it needs a temporary traffic order, which takes longer, so ask early.

Is the town centre likely to flood on our moving day?

Rarely, but it has happened. Northwich sits where the Weaver and the Dane meet, and the town centre has flooded several times, most recently in 2019 and 2021. Flood defences were finished in 2017. If heavy rain is forecast, we check the routes in on the morning.

Can you move us into a new house at Winnington Village?

Yes. New estates are a big part of Northwich moving today. We check whether the roads are finished and where the lorry can stop, and if the house is not ready on time, we can hold your things in storage at our Broadheath depot.

Will you take the beds apart and put them back together?

Yes, with our packing service. We list the beds, wardrobes and tables that need to come apart, take them down on the day and rebuild them in the new home, starting with the beds.
