Macclesfield, SK10 and SK11

An Old Silk Town On The Edge Of The Hills

Macclesfield is a market town in Cheshire East, about 16 miles south of Manchester. It sits on the River Bollin, with Macclesfield Forest and the hills of the Peak District rising to the east. The town was once the world's biggest maker of finished silk, and that history is still written into its streets and houses.

Removals in Macclesfield reflect that past. The town centre is on a hill, with St Michael's Church at the top and the famous 108 Steps dropping down to Waters Green and the station. Rows of terraces climb the slopes around it. Further out are family estates in Tytherington and the newer edges of town.

CMR Relocation is based in Broadheath, Altrincham. Macclesfield is about 22.4 km from our depot in a straight line, one of the furthest towns we cover. We plan for that, with early starts and honest timings.

The drive

Our Route From Altrincham To Macclesfield

There are two good ways to Macclesfield from our depot, and we choose on the day.

  1. The A538. This road runs all the way from Altrincham to Macclesfield. It passes through Hale Barns, under the airport runways, into Wilmslow and on through Prestbury to Tytherington.
  2. The A555 and A523. The relief road takes us east past the airport to the A6 at Hazel Grove. From there the A523 runs south through Poynton into Macclesfield.

Prestbury village has a lower speed limit and can be slow, so at busy times the second route may be quicker. Either way, the lorry leaves early. That gives the crew a full day at your house, not a half day after a long drive.

If you are moving from Macclesfield towards Manchester, the same roads work in reverse. Our guide to choosing a moving date explains why mid-week and mid-month moves are often easier.

Weavers' terraces

Moving Out Of A Macclesfield Silk Weaver's Terrace

Many older terraces in Macclesfield were built for silk workers. Some have a top floor with long rows of windows. That was the weaving room, built to let in as much light as possible for the looms. Today it is often a bedroom, a study or a loft room.

These houses are charming, but they are tight. Stairs are steep and narrow. Doors are low. The top flight to the old weaving room can be steeper still. Front doors open onto the pavement, often on a slope.

Our crew works them carefully:

  • Beds and wardrobes come apart in the room, with fixings bagged and labelled
  • Large pieces are measured against every door and turn on the survey
  • Floors and stair walls are protected before anything moves
  • Boxes are kept small enough to carry safely on a steep stair

Packing yourself? Our advice on packing boxes covers weight, labelling and what not to pack.

Around town

Macclesfield Neighbourhoods And What They Mean For Your Move

The town centre and Waters Green

Flats above shops and old terraces on steep streets. The station is at Waters Green, at the foot of the hill. Parking is the main thing to plan.

Hurdsfield, Upton and Broken Cross

Terraces, semis and post-war homes, many with simpler access. These are steady moves, though some streets are steep.

Tytherington

On the north side of town, with larger modern family homes, drives and garages. Access is good, and the volume is usually higher.

Prestbury, Bollington and the hills

Villages around the town, with stone cottages and country houses. Some lanes are narrow and steep, so we check lorry access before the day.

Close by there is plenty to draw people in. The Macclesfield Canal runs along the east side of the town. The Middlewood Way, a walking and cycling path on an old railway, runs north towards Marple. Tegg's Nose country park and Macclesfield Forest are a short drive away.

Council rules

Loading And Parking Rules For A Macclesfield Removal

Macclesfield is run by Cheshire East Council, so Greater Manchester parking rules do not apply. Cheshire East does not give parking dispensations for moving house. It says that you can park to load and unload without one.

That is helpful, but there are limits. You cannot load where loading is restricted. Look for marks on the kerb and the plate on a nearby post. You cannot load on zigzags, at bus stops, in taxi bays, on school markings or in disabled bays.

The town centre is where these rules bite. Steep, narrow streets with yellow lines and busy junctions leave few safe spots. Where we cannot stop by the door, we find the nearest safe place and carry, or use a smaller van to shuttle. On the survey we work this out, so the quote reflects the real job.

FAQs

What Macclesfield Movers Ask Before Booking

Moving in or around Macclesfield? Ask us anything about the move.

Macclesfield is further out. Do you still cover it?

Yes. Macclesfield is about 22.4 km from our Broadheath depot in a straight line, one of the furthest Cheshire towns on our map. We start early so the crew reaches your door at a sensible hour, and we allow for the drive in the timings.

Our terrace has a top-floor weaving room. Is that a problem?

Not a problem, but we need to know. Those top floors are often reached by a steep, narrow stair, and the furniture up there may have been built in place. We check the stair and any awkward pieces on the survey.

Do I need a permit from Cheshire East Council for the lorry?

Normally not. Cheshire East does not issue dispensations for moving house, because loading and unloading is allowed without one. It is not allowed where there are loading restrictions, or on zigzags, bus stops, taxi bays, school markings and disabled bays. We check your street before the day.

Can you move us from Macclesfield to London or Europe?

We move people across Europe, mainly to France, Spain, Germany and the Netherlands, using our own vehicles for the UK leg and partners for the crossing. For long UK moves, call us and we will talk through the options.

How early should I book?

Four to six weeks ahead is a good guide, and earlier for Fridays and the end of the month. Those dates fill up first. If you have a fixed completion date, call as soon as you know it.
