Ashton-under-Lyne, Tameside

Ashton, Where The Tram Ends And Three Canals Meet

Ashton-under-Lyne is the main town of Tameside. It has a big market, a ring of mill-era streets and some of the busiest roads in the borough.

Good removals in Ashton-under-Lyne begin with knowing how the town works. The Metrolink tram line from Manchester ends here, at the Ashton-under-Lyne stop, after calling at Ashton Moss and Ashton West. The railway station sits on the line that runs east through Stalybridge towards Huddersfield. The A635 runs through the middle of town, and junction 23 of the M60 is on its western edge.

All of that makes Ashton easy to reach and easy to leave. It also means traffic, bus lanes and parking rules in the centre. We are CMR Relocation, based at Broadheath in Altrincham, and we plan for those details before your moving day rather than on it.

  • Postcodes OL6 and OL7, from Hurst and Hartshead down to Guide Bridge
  • Tram stops at Ashton Moss, Ashton West and the town centre
  • Rail from Ashton station, with more trains a short hop away at Stalybridge
  • About 21 km from our depot in a straight line, round the M60

Homes in Ashton

From Mill Terraces To New Builds Near Ashton Moss

Ashton grew on cotton. Around 75 mills were built here between the late 1700s and the early 1900s, and the workers' terraces still fill much of the town. These houses are sound, but they were built for people, not for modern sofas. Front doors open straight onto the pavement or a short yard. Stairs are steep and often turn at the top.

For a terrace move, our crew measures the big pieces before the day. If a sofa or wardrobe will not make the turn, we take the door off, or take the piece apart if you have booked our packing service. We never force it.

Further out you find the suburbs. Hurst, Waterloo and Taunton have streets of semis and newer houses with drives. Hartshead sits higher up on the edge of the hills. The flat land at Ashton Moss, west of the centre, holds a large retail park and the IKEA store, which opened in 2006.

Tameside General Hospital is in Ashton too. If you work shifts there and need a simple move on a fixed date, tell us the date first and we will plan the rest around it.

Parking

Ashton's Five Residents' Parking Zones

Ashton has more residents' parking zones than any other Tameside town, so this is the part of an Ashton move that most needs a plan.

Tameside Council lists five zones in Ashton-under-Lyne, named A1 to A5. They cover streets such as Mellor Road, Witham Street and Willow Wood Close, plus roads around them. In a zone, residents hold permits, and each home can have one visitor permit. The council also sells books of daily scratch cards.

The council's website does not set out a special service for removal vans. So the safe route is to ask its Parking Services team, based at Tame Street Depot in Stalybridge, what will cover a lorry on your street for the day. Do it a few weeks ahead. Then tell us the answer when you book.

Outside the zones, the usual rules apply. Do not stop on double yellow lines at any time. Check the plate before using a single yellow line. Loading bays near the market are for loading only, and only outside the times shown on the sign. We plan around all three, and if the lorry cannot stop right outside, we bring a smaller van to shuttle the last stretch.

How An Ashton-under-Lyne Move Comes Together

Every move follows the same four steps. Here is how they play out for a home in Ashton.

  1. 1

    You tell us the address

Call 0161 478 3639 or use the form. We ask about your zone, the stairs and how close the lorry can get to the door.

  2. 2

    We price the job

You get a clear quote at no cost. It lists packing, crates or storage if you want them.

  3. 3

    We plan the street

We fix the stopping point, the time and the crew size. If the market is on, we plan our arrival around it.

  4. 4

    Our crew moves you

Floors are covered first. Then we wrap, load, drive and place each box in the room on its label.

Canal-side living

Flats By Portland Basin And The Ashton Canal

Three canals meet in Ashton: the Ashton Canal, the Peak Forest Canal and the Huddersfield Narrow Canal. Portland Basin, where they join, has an old warehouse that is now a museum. Mills and warehouses along the water have been turned into flats, and new blocks have gone up beside them.

Moving in or out of a canal-side flat is a little different from a house. The door may face the towpath, not the road. There may be a lift, a long corridor or a gated car park. We ask about all of these when you ring, so we can send the right number of people.

Packing matters more in a flat, too. Boxes that are packed tight and labelled clearly move faster through corridors and lifts. Our professional packing team can pack the whole flat for you, or you can follow our room-by-room packing advice and do it yourself. If your next home is not ready, we can hold everything in containerised storage at Broadheath.

FAQs

Ashton-under-Lyne House Moves: Common Questions

Moving in or around Ashton-under-Lyne? Ask us anything about the move.

My Ashton street is in a residents' parking zone. What do I do about the van?

Tameside Council runs five residents' zones in Ashton, A1 to A5. Each property can have one visitor permit, and the council also sells daily scratch cards. Ask the council's Parking Services team which of these can cover a removal vehicle on your street, and tell us your zone when you book. We plan where the lorry stops around the answer.

Which postcodes do you cover in Ashton-under-Lyne?

All of them. Ashton-under-Lyne is covered by the OL6 and OL7 postcode districts, from Hurst and Hartshead on the hills to Guide Bridge and Waterloo. We also cover the rest of Tameside and every borough of Greater Manchester.

Can you move us to Ashton from the other side of Manchester?

Yes. Our depot is in Broadheath, Altrincham, about 21 km from Ashton in a straight line. We come round the M60 to junction 23, which puts us on the A635 into the town. Moves across the region are a normal day's work for our crew.

We live in a canal-side flat near Portland Basin. Can you manage the stairs?

Yes. Flats need more planning, not more worry. We ask about lifts, stairs, entry codes and the distance from the door to the nearest safe stopping point, then send enough people for the carry.

Do you move businesses in Ashton too?

We do. Shops, offices and clinics can be moved in the evening or at a weekend so you lose as little trading time as possible. We can also disconnect and reconnect computers with our own crew.
