Removals in Irlam and Cadishead are close to home for us. Our depot in Broadheath is only six kilometres away in a straight line, with the Manchester Ship Canal in between, so we know the crossings and plan the route before the day.
Close, but over the water
Six Kilometres Away, With A Ship Canal In Between
Irlam is one of the nearest towns to our depot. On a map it is almost next door. On the road it is a little more involved.
Irlam and Cadishead sit on the north bank of the Manchester Ship Canal, at the south-west corner of the City of Salford. Our depot is on the other side of the water, in Broadheath, Altrincham. Between us are the canal and the River Mersey, and there are only a few places to cross.
The closest is the Warburton toll bridge, which links Trafford with the Irlam side. It is a historic high-level bridge, built in 1890 for the Ship Canal. It also has a weight limit. A loaded removal lorry would need a special permit, booked days ahead. So for our removals in Irlam we normally go the long way round, by the M60 and the Barton High Level Bridge, then west along the A57 Liverpool Road.
That is the kind of local detail that matters on moving day. A firm that does not know it may plan the short route and lose time at the bridge. We are CMR Relocation, and we have run moves from Broadheath since 2011. We plan the route before we give you a start time.
Route options
Getting A Removal Lorry Across The Ship Canal To Irlam
| Crossing | Good for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Warburton toll bridge | Cars and light vans from the Trafford side | A weight limit, a toll, and a permit needed for heavier vehicles |
| M60 Barton High Level Bridge | Our loaded lorries, with the A57 into Irlam | Rush-hour traffic on the motorway |
| Trains from Irlam station | You, if you are travelling ahead of the lorry | Trains run on the line between Manchester and Liverpool via Warrington Central |
If you are moving between Irlam and somewhere in Trafford, such as Partington, Urmston or Sale, your car may take the toll bridge while our lorry goes round. That is fine. We agree a meeting time at the new house, so nobody waits on the doorstep.
Homes in M44
Family Semis, Bungalows And New Estates In Irlam And Cadishead
The M44 postcode covers Irlam, Cadishead and Higher Irlam. The homes are mostly semis and newer estates, with some terraces near the old centre and some bungalows. People come here because they get more house for their money than they would closer to the city, with Chat Moss farmland on the doorstep.
That makes Irlam a place for family moves. Many are upsizing from a smaller home in Salford or Trafford. Others are older couples moving into a bungalow to have everything on one floor. Both kinds of move suit a short, well-planned day.
- Bungalows: short carries and quick loads, with care for loft boxes
- Semis: beds and wardrobes taken apart and rebuilt with our packing service
- New estates: floor runners on fresh carpets and pads on new paint
- Garages: tools, bikes and garden furniture loaded last, unloaded first
If you are moving out of a long-held family home, our packing team can take care of the cupboards that have filled up over the years.
Mossland edges
Farmhouses And Long Drives Around Chat Moss
North of Irlam, the land opens out into Chat Moss, a wide area of flat farmland. Homes out here can sit at the end of long tracks or behind farm gates. Some yards are soft after rain.
For these moves, we ask about the access before the day. How wide is the gate? Is the track firm enough for a lorry? Is there room to turn? If the answer is no, we bring a smaller vehicle to shuttle between the house and the lorry on the lane. It takes a little longer, but it is far better than a lorry stuck in a field.
Outbuildings, sheds and stables often hold more than people expect. Walk round them with us when we quote, so the load and the crew size are right.
Parking
Parking And Council Rules In Irlam
Irlam is part of the City of Salford, so Salford City Council looks after parking. Most residential streets have no restrictions, and many homes have drives. Please keep your drive clear on the morning, and ask a neighbour to leave a gap if your road is narrow.
Near the shops and on main roads such as Liverpool Road, there are yellow lines. If the lorry needs to stand there, the council offers a dispensation for a signed removal vehicle. It is booked online through MiPermit with at least 24 hours' notice, and it must be in place before we park. For a reserved stretch of kerb, the council can suspend the restrictions, which needs 72 hours' notice, not counting weekends.
Cadishead has its own row of shops along Liverpool Road, and the same rules apply there. Further out, towards the farms and the mossland, the roads have no markings at all, but they can be narrow with soft verges. A lorry parked half on a verge after rain can sink, so we look for a firm surface and, if needed, use a smaller van for the last stretch.
If you are moving from a flat, your old building may also have rules of its own. Ask the managing agent about lift bookings and loading times, and pass them to us with your quote request. We check your address when we quote and tell you if any of this applies.

FAQs
Moving To Or From Irlam: Questions We Hear
Moving in or around Irlam? Ask us anything about the move.
Irlam is close to Altrincham. Why can the drive take longer than expected?
Because the Manchester Ship Canal and the River Mersey lie between us. The nearest road crossing, the Warburton toll bridge, has a weight limit that rules out a loaded removal lorry without a permit. So our lorries usually go round by the M60 and the Barton High Level Bridge, then west along Liverpool Road. We allow for that when we plan your start time.
Do you move people from Partington or Urmston to Irlam?
Yes. Moves across the canal between Trafford and Irlam are very local for us. Our depot is in Broadheath, Altrincham, so Trafford is home ground and Irlam is only a short run beyond it.
Is parking a problem for a removal lorry in Irlam?
Usually less than in the city. Many homes in Irlam and Cadishead have drives or quiet side roads. Where there are yellow lines, for example near shops on Liverpool Road, Salford City Council offers a dispensation booked through MiPermit at least 24 hours ahead. We tell you if your street needs one.
Can you move a bungalow in a day?
Most bungalow moves fit into one day, because everything is on one floor and the carry is short. If there is a large loft or a garage full of tools, we may suggest packing those the day before. We confirm the plan when we quote.
We are moving out of Irlam towards Warrington. Can you help?
Yes. Warrington is just over the county line, and the A57 runs straight there. We move people from Irlam to anywhere in the UK, and to Europe, mainly France, Spain, Germany and the Netherlands.
Which bins will we have after moving to Irlam or Cadishead?
Irlam and Cadishead are in Salford, which uses four bins. The black bin is for general waste and the blue bin for paper and card. The brown bin takes glass, cans and plastic bottles, pots and tubs. The pink-lidded bin is for garden and food waste.
Is Cadishead a separate area for your quote?
No. Cadishead and Irlam share the M44 postcode and the same council, and we plan them the same way. What changes the quote is the house, the access and the load, not which side of the boundary you live on.
