Removals In Prestwich, From The Village To Heaton Park
Our removals in Prestwich mostly help young families and professionals moving out of central Manchester for more space, a village centre and Heaton Park on the doorstep. We plan around Bury Council's parking rules and the busy A56.
Out of the city, into the village
Why So Many City Renters End Up In Prestwich
Prestwich sits just north of the Manchester city boundary, along the A56 Bury New Road. Trams reach the city centre in around a quarter of an hour, and Heaton Park is right on the edge of town. That mix brings a steady flow of people from flats in Manchester and Salford who want a house, a garden and a park nearby.
Most of the moves we quote in Prestwich are those people: young families and professionals swapping a city flat for a semi or a terrace. Others are local families moving up to a bigger house on the Heaton Park side, or older owners moving down to something smaller near the village.
We are CMR Relocation, a removal company based at our own depot in Broadheath, Altrincham. Since 2011 our crews have moved homes and offices across Greater Manchester, and our removals in Prestwich cover the whole M25 area, including Sedgley Park, Rainsough and Simister.

Bury Council Waivers And Suspensions For A Prestwich Removal
Cross the boundary from Manchester or Salford and the parking rules change. Prestwich is in the Metropolitan Borough of Bury.
A Waiver
Permission to park on yellow lines, in a loading bay or in a resident parking zone for a short time. Bury offers it to trades and site workers where it is essential to their work.
A Suspension
Permission to use an on-street pay-and-display bay or a council car park. Useful if the only space near your door is a paid bay.
Two Working Days
Bury Council says it processes applications in around two working days. Sooner may be possible, at extra cost.
Resident Zones
Bury runs resident parking schemes near town centres, hospitals and Metrolink stations. Some Prestwich streets fall into that pattern.
Here is a simple way to think about it. If the van needs to stand on a yellow line, in a loading bay or in a permit zone, you need a waiver. If it needs a paid parking bay, you need a suspension. If your street has none of these and there is room outside, you may need nothing at all, just a clear drive or a gap left by neighbours. Busy roads such as Bury New Road are different, because stopping there can block buses and traffic, so we plan to load from a side street where we can.
The council's first concern is road safety, so not every request is granted as asked. That is one more reason to plan early. When you book, we look at your street, tell you whether a waiver or a suspension makes sense and help you apply. On a quiet street with no lines, you may not need either.
Village centre
Living Near The Longfield Centre While The Village Is Rebuilt
The middle of Prestwich is changing. Bury Council has formed a joint venture with Muse to rebuild the village centre, including the Longfield Centre. The first phase is a new travel hub car park, so there is somewhere to park before the old centre is knocked down. Later phases plan new homes, a market hall, shops and a library around a bigger village square.
Works like this bring changing road layouts, site traffic and short-term closures. If you live near the village centre, we check the latest picture in the week before your move. We may suggest an earlier start, or a smaller vehicle that can get closer to your door.
If you are buying one of the new homes when they are finished, the same applies as on any new-build site. Handover dates can move. We hold a provisional date for you, and if you have to leave your old home first, your things can stay in our sealed storage containers in Broadheath until the keys are ready.
Larger homes
Older Family Houses On The Heaton Park Side
Some of the biggest homes in Prestwich are on the roads that lead toward Heaton Park and Sedgley Park. Many are older houses with high ceilings, bay windows and solid furniture. Moves here are bigger jobs, and they need more care.
- Heavy wardrobes and dressers wrapped in blankets and moved on dollies
- Mirrors and pictures packed in their own cartons
- Pianos moved by at least three people, with floor protection
- Tiled hallways and wooden floors covered before the first carry
If your home has fine china or glass, our careful packing service wraps each piece by hand. Upright and grand pianos are handled by our piano movers; a baby grand weighs about 225 to 545 KG.

Bury New Road, The Metrolink And The M60 Around Prestwich
| Route | What to know on moving day |
|---|---|
| A56 Bury New Road | The main road through Prestwich, with buses and shops. We avoid stopping on it at busy times. |
| Metrolink Bury line | Stops at Heaton Park, Prestwich and Besses o' th' Barn. Nearby streets can have permit parking. |
| M60 | Runs along the north side of Prestwich, our route from Broadheath. |
| Simister Island | Where the M60, M62 and M66 meet. National Highways began a major upgrade in 2026, due to finish in 2029 or 2030. |
Our depot is on Stuart Road in Broadheath, around 16 kilometres from Prestwich as the crow flies. We take the M60 round the west side of the city and come into Prestwich from the north. While the works at Simister Island go on, we allow extra time for the motorway.
From a flat to a house
Moving From A City Flat To A Prestwich Semi
If you are moving from a flat in Manchester or Salford, your old building will have its own rules for the lift and the loading bay. Get those from your concierge or managing agent early and pass them on. We will book the slot and protect the lift if asked.
At the Prestwich end, the job is simpler: a house with a front door, and often a drive. Moving from a flat into a house usually means buying more furniture. If new beds or a sofa are arriving on the same day, tell us the delivery times. We will make sure the rooms are clear for them.
Read our guide on comparing removal firms before you book, and use the room-by-room packing tips if you are packing yourself. Crates from our crate hire service are handy for a flat, as they stack neatly in a lift.

FAQs
Prestwich Moves: Answers Before You Book
Moving in or around Prestwich? Ask us anything about the move.
Prestwich is in Bury, not Manchester. Does that change the parking rules?
Yes. Prestwich is in the Metropolitan Borough of Bury, so Bury Council handles parking, not Manchester or Salford. Bury calls its permissions a waiver, for yellow lines, loading bays and resident zones, and a suspension, for pay-and-display bays and council car parks. The council says applications take around two working days.
Will the Prestwich village rebuild affect my move?
It may, if you live close to the Longfield Centre. Bury Council and its partner Muse are redeveloping the village centre in phases, with a new travel hub car park built first. Roads and parking near the site can change while work goes on, so we check the latest layout before your moving day.
Do you move flats near the Metrolink stops?
Yes. Streets near the Prestwich, Heaton Park and Besses o' th' Barn stops can have resident parking schemes, because Bury runs them near Metrolink stations. If your street has one, a council waiver lets our lorry park there for the day.
How do you get from Altrincham to Prestwich?
Prestwich is about 16 kilometres from our Broadheath depot in a straight line. We usually take the M60 round to the Whitefield side and come down the A56 Bury New Road. Work on the Simister Island junction, which began in 2026, can slow the M60 nearby, so we build that into the start time.
Can you move a large house on the Heaton Park side in one day?
Most can be done in a day with the right crew size. Bigger homes with a lot of furniture may need a packing day first. We will tell you which when we quote, and we never squeeze a large move into a crew that is too small.
Prestwich has a Manchester postcode. Which council handles school places?
Bury Council. Prestwich is in the Bury borough even though its postcode is M25. So school applications, council tax and bins all go through Bury, not Manchester. Apply for a September place by the national closing dates, or make an in-year application if term has started.
