Shaw and Crompton, Oldham

A Small Town Under Crompton Moor

Shaw and Crompton is a small town about two miles north of Oldham and four miles south-east of Rochdale. It sits in the Oldham borough, under the slopes of Crompton Moor. The moor rises to about 391 metres and covers around 160 acres of open ground and woodland.

If you are planning removals in Shaw, you are moving to or from a town with a strong local feel. It has its own shops, Dunwood Park and Jubilee Gardens, and a tram stop with a direct line to Manchester. Most homes are close together, and the streets get steeper the nearer you go to the moor.

We are CMR Relocation, a removal company with our own depot at Broadheath in Altrincham. Shaw is at the far side of Greater Manchester from us, but distance is not a problem. We plan the route, the parking and the crew before the day, so you get the same service as a family round the corner from our depot.

The Four Weeks Before A Shaw Move

A calm moving day starts a month before. This is the plan we suggest for a home in OL2.

  1. 1

    Four weeks out

Ask for a quote. Tell us about steps, steep drives and how close the lorry can park.

  2. 2

    Two weeks out

Start packing the rooms you use least. Clear the loft and shed, and sort what to give away.

  3. 3

    The week before

Pack the kitchen last but one. Ask neighbours to leave room outside on the day.

  4. 4

    Moving day

Our crew protects floors, wraps furniture and loads by room. With our packing service, beds go back up too.

For more detail, our full moving checklist runs week by week. Our packing guide explains how to box up glass, books and the kitchen.

Getting there

From Railway To Tram: How Shaw Connects

Shaw had a railway station from 1863 until it closed in October 2009. The old line was turned into part of the Metrolink network, and the Shaw and Crompton tram stop opened in December 2012. Today trams run south through Derker and Oldham to Manchester, and north through Newhey and Milnrow to Rochdale.

By road, Shaw sits just south of junction 21 of the M62. That makes it handy for anyone who works in Rochdale, Leeds or Huddersfield. Going south, roads run through Royton towards Oldham and Chadderton, where the A627(M) and the M60 take over.

Our lorries come from Broadheath, about 27 km away in a straight line. We usually take the M60 round the north of the city and come up through Chadderton and Royton. We set off early, so our crew is at your door on time and the drive does not eat into your day.

Look at the local figures below for house prices, schools and crime in the borough. They come from official sources and help if you are still choosing a home.

Homes in Shaw

Terraces Built For Shaw's Mill Workers

Shaw was a cotton town. The last cotton was spun here in 1989, at the Lilac and Park mills. The site of Dawn Mill now holds an Asda supermarket. The mills have gone, but the homes built for their workers are still here. About a third of the town's homes are Victorian or Edwardian terraces.

Terraces mean narrow stairs and front doors close to the pavement. Our crew measures big pieces before the day. If a wardrobe or sofa will not turn on the stairs, we take a door off its hinges, or take the piece apart if you have booked our packing service. We never force a piece through.

Around the older streets are areas such as Cowlishaw, Birshaw, Rushcroft and Whitfield, with a mix of terraces, semis and newer houses. High Crompton and Buckstones sit higher up towards the moor. Roads there climb, and some are narrow, so we check the approach before we choose the vehicle.

People move to Shaw for the small-town feel, the green space and family homes at good prices. Some move within the town, from a terrace to a semi with a garden.

Parking

Stopping A Lorry On A Shaw Street

Shaw comes under Oldham Council. The council runs residents' parking schemes in parts of the borough, where visitors must use limited-waiting bays or show a visitor pass. If your street has a scheme, ask the council what a removal vehicle may do there, and tell us before the day.

  • Check for yellow lines and bus stops outside your home
  • Ask neighbours to keep a gap free the night before
  • Tell us about steep drives, steps or back streets
  • We bring a smaller van if the lorry cannot stop outside

On terraced streets the main problem is parked cars. A short note to the neighbours usually solves it. We keep the lorry clear of the tram stop and of junctions, so the street stays safe for everyone.

FAQs

Shaw And Crompton Moves: Your Questions

Moving in or around Shaw? Ask us anything about the move.

Is Shaw part of Oldham for council matters?

Yes. Shaw and Crompton is in the Metropolitan Borough of Oldham, so parking, bins and roads are run by Oldham Council. The postcode district is OL2.

How do you get from Altrincham to Shaw?

Shaw is about 27 km from our Broadheath depot in a straight line. We usually take the M60 round the north of Manchester and come up through Chadderton and Royton. From the M62, junction 21 is just to the north of the town. We leave early so we arrive on time.

Can you move us up near Crompton Moor?

Yes. Homes towards High Crompton and Buckstones sit higher up, on roads that climb towards the moor. Tell us your address when you ask for a quote, and we will check the approach and pick the right vehicle.

Can we get the tram to our new home on moving day?

You can. The Shaw and Crompton tram stop is on the Oldham and Rochdale line, with trams south to Oldham and Manchester and north to Rochdale. It can be easier for the family to travel ahead by tram while our crew loads the lorry.

What if we need to store things between homes?

We can collect from Shaw and keep your things in sealed containers at our Broadheath depot. There is no minimum term, though most people book for at least a month. We deliver when your new home is ready.
