Bolton postcodes
Bolton By Postcode: BL1, BL2 And BL3
Bolton is a big town with a wide choice of homes. This is a quick guide to the main postcodes and the moves we plan there.
| Postcode | Areas | Typical homes | Move notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| BL1 | Town centre, Smithills, Halliwell, Heaton, Astley Bridge | Terraces, large semis, detached houses to the north-west | Big family moves in Heaton and Smithills; tight terraced streets in Halliwell |
| BL2 | Harwood, Bradshaw, Breightmet, Tonge Moor | Semis, detached homes, newer estates | Drives make loading easier; more garages and lofts to clear |
| BL3 | Great Lever, Daubhill, Deane, Little Lever | Victorian terraces, semis, flats | On-street parking; front doors on the pavement |
Bromley Cross and Egerton, further north, have some of the larger homes in the town, with the West Pennine Moors behind them. Lostock and the west of Bolton run towards Horwich. Whichever part you live in, removals in Bolton start the same way with us: a chat, a look at the house and a free, written quote from CMR Relocation.
Bolton is a large town, and it has a bit of everything: terraces near the centre, plenty of semis, larger homes to the north and new estates on the edges. That is why we ask for your street and house type before we price anything. A BL3 terrace and a BL1 detached house need very different days.
Family homes
Larger Houses In Heaton, Harwood And Bromley Cross
The north and west of Bolton have plenty of big semis and detached houses. These moves have more of everything: more rooms, more furniture and often a garage, shed and loft full of things you forgot you owned. They also tend to have the most fragile items, like glass cabinets, mirrors and good china.
For a house like this, we often send two lorries or plan two loads. Our crew can pack the whole house the day before, so moving day is only about loading and driving. Kitchens, glassware and pictures are the jobs most people hand over first. If you have an upright or grand piano, our specialist piano moving service sends at least three people and lays floor protection.
If you are moving out before the new house is ready, our containerised storage in Broadheath can hold everything until you have the keys.
Students and small moves
Student Lets And Small Moves Around Bolton
Bolton has a university in the town centre, now called the University of Greater Manchester and formerly the University of Bolton. That brings a steady flow of students and young renters moving in and out of flats and shared houses. Most of these moves are small. A bed, a desk, a few bags and a dozen boxes.
We are happy to quote for small loads. Tell us what is going and which floor you are on. If the flat has a lift or a set time for loading, let us know so we can book around it. For flats above shops in the town centre, we plan the stair carry and the walk to the lorry.
Moving your own things in a car? Our plastic crate hire is a sturdy, reusable way to pack, and the crates stack neatly in a boot as well as a lorry.
Moving out at the end of a tenancy? Take photos of each room once it is empty, and keep them with your check-out notes. Book the move a day or two before the tenancy ends if you can, so you have time to clean and hand back the keys without a rush.

Parking and roads
Bolton Council Parking And The M61 Run
On-street parking across the borough is managed by Bolton Council's parking services team. The council can suspend parking places for a time by temporary order and marks them with signs on the street. If your home or office has bays, loading limits or yellow lines outside, contact the council well before your date and ask what is possible.
On terraced streets in Daubhill or Great Lever, cars often park on both sides. A word with the neighbours a few days before usually frees up the space outside your door. We will tell you how long the lorry is so you can explain it.
Getting to Bolton is simple for us. Our lorries leave Broadheath, take the M60 round to the M61 and come off at the Bolton junctions. The A666 runs into the town centre, and the A6 crosses the south of the borough. Bolton Interchange, by the train station, has trains to Manchester, Wigan, Preston and beyond if you are travelling separately.
Once you are in
Bolton Bin Colours And Other Jobs For Your First Week
Bolton Council collects four bins, and the colours are not the same as in other parts of Greater Manchester. The grey bin is for general waste. The beige bin takes paper, card and drinks cartons. The burgundy bin is for plastic bottles, pots, tubs and trays, along with cans and glass jars. The green bin is for food and garden waste. If you have moved from Salford or Manchester, it is easy to mix them up for the first few weeks.
If the bins at your new house are missing or damaged, contact the council early. Your collection day is on the council's website, found by postcode.
Next, tell Bolton Council when you moved in, so council tax starts on the right date. Register with a GP practice that covers your street; you can do it online and you do not need proof of address. Students should check if their university has its own health service first.
Finally, read your gas, electric and water meters on the day you get the keys, and take a photo of each one. It saves an argument over the first bill.
Before you book
Planning Your Bolton Move Week By Week
Start early if you can. Our moving house checklist takes you from booking a date to the first night in the new place. If you are moving a business, the office move planning list covers IT, post and telling your clients.
When you compare quotes for removals in Bolton, check what each one includes. Packing, dismantling, storage and the number of people on the day all change the price. Our guide on how to compare removal firms lists the questions worth asking.
Once you are in, there is plenty to explore. Moss Bank Park, Queen's Park and Smithills Hall are all close, and the West Pennine Moors start on the edge of town. The local figures below show house prices, schools and crime, if you are still deciding where to buy.
