Removals In Marple, From Canal Cottages To Hillside Homes
Removals in Marple come with hills, stone cottages and homes beside the Peak Forest Canal. CMR Relocation plans the access first, so the day runs to time.
Marple, SK6
Marple Is A Hill Town With Canals Running Through It
Marple sits on the eastern edge of the Stockport borough, where Greater Manchester meets the hills. Its postcode is SK6. The Peak Forest Canal runs right through the town and drops down the Marple Lock Flight, a run of 16 locks close to the centre. The Macclesfield Canal joins it at Marple Junction. Just outside town, the Marple Aqueduct carries the canal high over the River Goyt.
All of that is lovely to live beside. It also makes removals in Marple more interesting than most. Homes are built on slopes. Lanes are narrow. Some cottages face a towpath rather than a road. Before we quote a Marple job, we want to know exactly where the lorry can stop and how far the crew will walk.
CMR Relocation works from Broadheath, Altrincham. Marple is one of the further towns we cover in the borough, about 20.6 km from the depot in a straight line. The drive runs along the M60 to Stockport, then out on the A626, which carries on through Marple towards Glossop.

Marple Bridge, Rose Hill And The Rest Of The Town
Each part of Marple feels different on moving day.
Marple centre and the locks
Shops, terraces and older homes near the lock flight. Parking is tight at busy times, and some homes are reached from paths by the water.
Marple Bridge
Down by the Goyt, with stone cottages and steep lanes. Low doors and tight stairs are common, so furniture often comes apart.
Rose Hill
Around Rose Hill Marple station, with family semis and detached homes. Access is usually simpler, and many houses have drives.
Mellor and the hill farms
Higher up, with farmhouses and long tracks. A big lorry may not reach the door, so we plan a shuttle or a longer carry.
Stone cottages
Packing And Carrying In An Old Marple Cottage
Many of Marple's older homes were built of local stone for mill families, long before anyone had a king-size bed. They are full of charm. They are also full of low beams, thick walls and stairs that turn back on themselves.
We handle them the slow, safe way. With our packing service, a bed is taken apart in the room rather than forced round a bend, and wardrobes that come apart are flat-packed. Solid pieces that do not come apart are measured against every door and turn on the route before moving day.
Boxes for a cottage should be small. A full book box is heavy on a steep stair, and a crew moving fifty of them gets tired. Split the books between small boxes and pad the gaps with linen. Our home packing tips show how.
If you would rather not pack at all, our full packing service brings the boxes and paper and does the work for you, room by room.
Hills and lanes
Getting A Removal Lorry Up Marple's Steep Streets
Lorries and steep hills need care. A loaded vehicle is heavy, and a narrow lane with parked cars on both sides may have no room to pass. In winter, an icy slope can stop a move in its tracks.
Here is what we check on the survey:
- Can the lorry park level, or will it stand on a slope?
- Is there room to open the rear doors and lower the tail lift?
- How far is the carry from the lorry to the front door?
- Are there steps, gates or a path along the canal on the way?
- Is there a turning space at the end of the lane?
The answers decide the crew size and the timings. On some Marple jobs we send a smaller van alongside the lorry. It runs between the house and the main vehicle, so nothing heavy is carried further than it needs to be.
Marple's two stations, Marple and Rose Hill Marple, are both busy in the morning. Roads around them fill up with parked cars, so we avoid booking a lorry there at rush hour where we can.
Permits
Marple Parking And Stockport Council Dispensations
Marple falls under Stockport Council for parking. If the only place to stop is on a yellow line or in a marked bay, you can ask the council to suspend the bay or let our lorry park there. Its online form asks for the vehicle type and registration, why it is needed, what we will be doing, and the dates and times. The council says it replies within 10 working days, and a charge may be due.
In practice, permits are not the main issue in Marple. Space is. A dispensation will not widen a lane. That is why we look at the street first and then decide whether a permit, a shuttle van or a neighbour's drive is the answer.
Call Darrin or the team on 0161 478 3639 and we will talk you through it before you book.
Who comes here
Why People Move Out To Marple
Most people we hear from are moving to Marple for the green space. The Roman Lakes, Etherow Country Park and the Middlewood Way are all close by, and the Peak District starts just to the east. Trains from Marple still reach Manchester Piccadilly, so you can work in the city and walk the canal at the weekend.
That means a lot of moves come from the city or the inner suburbs. People swap a flat or a terrace for a house with a garden and a view. Those moves can involve a gap between selling and buying, as the right cottage takes time to come up.
Our sealed storage at the Broadheath depot covers that gap. Your things stay packed and dry, with no minimum term. And when it is time to move, our house moving service delivers them to the new home, and with our packing service sets the beds up the same day.
If you have a piano, tell us early. A piano in a cottage on a slope needs at least three people and the right kit. Our specialist piano moves page explains how we do it.

FAQs
Questions About Moving House In Marple
Moving in or around Marple? Ask us anything about the move.
Can a removal lorry get down to a cottage by the canal?
Sometimes, but not always. Some canal-side homes are reached by a narrow lane or a towpath that no lorry can use. In those cases we park as close as we safely can and carry, or run a smaller van as a shuttle. We check this before the day, so the quote reflects the real carry.
Do stone cottages take longer to move?
Often, yes. The stairs are steep and narrow, the doors are low and the walls are thick, so big pieces need careful handling. Beds and wardrobes usually come apart. We allow the extra time in the plan rather than rushing on the day.
Which council handles parking for a move in Marple?
Marple is in Stockport borough, so Stockport Council deals with parking dispensations and bay suspensions. It has an online form and aims to reply within 10 working days. On the steep, narrow roads the bigger problem is often space, not permits.
Can you move us from Marple to somewhere in the Peak District?
Yes. We move people across Greater Manchester and into Cheshire and Derbyshire. Rural roads need the same care as Marple's lanes. Tell us both addresses and we will look at the access at each end.
We are moving to Marple for the countryside. Can you store things while we rent first?
Yes. Our storage is at the Broadheath depot in Altrincham, in sealed containers. There is no minimum term, and most people book at least a month. Many buyers rent nearby while they wait for the right cottage to come up.
