Cheadle, Gatley and Heald Green, SK8

Two Old Villages Either Side Of The A34

Cheadle and Gatley sit next to each other in the north-west corner of Stockport borough. Cheadle has the bigger high street, the old parish church and the business parks along the A34. Gatley is smaller and quieter, with its own station and a village centre that has hardly changed shape in a century. Heald Green fills the gap to the south, running down towards Manchester Airport.

From our yard in Broadheath, the lorry joins the M60 and comes off at junction 3 for the A34, or at junction 2 for Gatley Road. Gatley is about 8.6 km from the depot in a straight line, and Cheadle village about 10.9 km. That is close enough for a full house move to be loaded, driven and unloaded in one working day, with time left to place the furniture.

All three places share the SK8 postcode with Cheadle Hulme, which often confuses people. Cheadle Hulme has its own page on our site. This one is for the villages to the north and west of it.

Conservation villages

Moving A Home In Cheadle Or Gatley Village

Both village centres are conservation areas. Cheadle's was set up in 1974 and takes in the High Street and the Grade I listed St Mary's church, most of which dates from the early 1500s. Gatley's followed in 1979 and covers about 12 hectares around Church Road and the Gatley Road shops, with St James' church and Gatley Hall among its listed buildings.

For a move, a conservation village brings older houses, smaller front gardens and streets that were laid out long before anyone owned a lorry. Before a job in either village centre, we check:

  • Where the lorry can stand without blocking the High Street or a bus stop
  • Whether a side road or a back lane gives a shorter, safer carry
  • How old doors, narrow halls and turning stairs will handle the biggest pieces
  • The time of day the street is quietest, so loading is quick

Gatley Carrs, the nature reserve at the end of Brookside Road, is reached down a single-track lane. If you live along there, we look at the lane before the day and bring a smaller van if the lorry cannot turn.

Both villages grew up around an old parish church, and the streets near it are the tightest.

The Mix Of Houses Across Cheadle, Gatley And Heald Green

Village cottages and terraces

Close to the two high streets. Steep stairs, low doorways and little parking at the door. Small boxes and a careful carry plan make these easier.

Victorian and Edwardian villas

Bigger houses on the roads leading out of Cheadle towards Stockport and Didsbury. High ceilings, heavy furniture and often a piano.

Inter-war and post-war semis

The bulk of Gatley and Heald Green. Drives, garages and lofts, which usually means more to pack than people expect.

Flats near the main roads

Newer blocks close to the A34 and the A560. We ask the managing agent about lift booking and where a van can stop before the day.

Stockport Council rules

Parking A Removal Lorry In Cheadle And Gatley

Most homes in Gatley and Heald Green have a drive or a quiet road outside, and the lorry can park there without any paperwork. It is the village centres and the main roads where parking needs thought.

If the only place to stop is on a yellow line or in a marked bay, Stockport Council can grant a dispensation or suspend the bay. It lists domestic removals as one of the reasons it accepts. The request goes through the council's online form, with the vehicle details and the dates. The council says it replies within 10 working days and that a charge may apply, so the request needs to go in well ahead of your moving day.

Two more things are worth knowing. Gatley Road passes under the airport railway line, so we check the bridge height against the lorry before planning that route. And Cheadle Heath has a resident permit scheme on some roads, which we take into account if you live there.

What Draws People To Cheadle And Gatley

Location is the main reason. Gatley station is on the Styal line, with trains to Manchester Piccadilly taking about 12 minutes. Heald Green, one stop south, also has direct trains to the airport. The M60 and the A34 are both on the doorstep, which suits people who drive to work across the south of Manchester or to the airport. A new station for Cheadle itself has been proposed, but at the time of writing it has not been built.

Green space is the other draw. Bruntwood Park has woodland, ponds and a big play area, and Gatley Carrs is a local nature reserve along the brook. Abney Hall Park sits right by Cheadle village. The hall itself, now offices, was where Agatha Christie often stayed with her sister's family, and it is said to have shaped the country houses in her books.

Some homes in Cheadle and Heald Green lie under the approach to Manchester Airport, so aircraft noise is worth checking before you buy. Manchester Airport publishes its flight paths, and the best test is to visit the street at different times of day.

How we work

Our Plan For A Cheadle Or Gatley Moving Day

Every move starts with a look at your home, in person or by video. We note the big pieces, the stairs, the loft and the garage, and agree on paper what is included. Our packing service is an extra you can add, and it includes taking furniture apart and rebuilding it at the other end. If it is on your quote, our crew does it on the day.

On the morning, runners go down on the carpets and film on the stairs before anything is lifted. Furniture is wrapped in blankets. Boxes are loaded in an order that makes the unload quick, so the rooms you need first are ready first.

CMR Relocation has moved homes and offices since 2011 and holds goods vehicle operator licence OC1109721. Darrin runs the company and answers the phone on 0161 478 3639, Monday to Saturday, 8:30am to 5:30pm. You can read what customers say on our reviews page.

Services Cheadle And Gatley Customers Add To A Move

Many SK8 moves are families going up a size, or older owners moving to somewhere smaller. Both often need a gap filled between selling and buying. Our container storage in Broadheath holds your things until the new home is ready.

Our full packing service takes care of the boxes if you would rather not. The Victorian houses on the Stockport side often have a piano, which our piano moving team handles. If you run a business on Cheadle Royal Business Park or the High Street, our office relocation crew works evenings and weekends.

To get a feel for the size of your move, try our removal volume calculator, then use our week-by-week moving checklist to plan the run-up.

FAQs

Cheadle And Gatley Moves: Questions People Ask

Moving in or around Cheadle? Ask us anything about the move.

Is this page about Cheadle in Stockport or Cheadle in Staffordshire?

Stockport. We cover Cheadle, Gatley and Heald Green, the SK8 villages between the A34 and Manchester Airport. Cheadle Hulme, a little further south, has its own page on our site.

How far is Cheadle from your depot?

Our depot is in Broadheath, Altrincham. Gatley is about 8.6 km away in a straight line and Cheadle village about 10.9 km. The M60 links the two, so the lorry is usually with you early in the morning.

Who handles parking if the lorry has to stop on a yellow line?

Stockport Council. Cheadle and Gatley are in its borough, and it takes dispensation and bay suspension requests through an online form. It replies within 10 working days and says a charge may apply, so we ask about access when we quote.

Can you take apart a large wardrobe or bed that will not go down our stairs?

Yes, with our packing service. Tell us about the pieces that came in flat or in sections, and we list them. Our crew takes them down in the room, bags the fixings and rebuilds them at the new house.

Is there a train station in Cheadle?

Not at the moment. A new station for Cheadle has been proposed for years, but it has not been built. The nearest stations today are Gatley and Heald Green on the Styal line into Manchester Piccadilly.
