Leigh Without A Station: Why Road Planning Comes First
Leigh lost its last passenger railway station in May 1969. It is often called one of the largest towns in Britain without one. For a removal, that changes how we plan the day.
With no trains, nearly everything in and out of Leigh travels by road. The A580 East Lancashire Road, built in the 1930s, runs along the south side of the town. The A579 bypasses the town centre on the line of the old Bolton and Leigh Railway. Both carry a lot of traffic, so for removals in Leigh we set off early and plan the last few streets before we arrive.
We are CMR Relocation, and our depot is on Stuart Road in Broadheath, Altrincham. Leigh is about 15 KM from there as the crow flies, which makes it the closest of the four Wigan borough towns on our map. We have moved homes and offices since 2011, and Leigh's mix of old terraces, converted mills and new estates means no two jobs here look the same.
Before we quote, we ask three things. What are you moving? How easy is the access at each end? And where can a lorry stop? The answers shape the crew size, the timings and whether you need a permit for the day.
The town
Three Townships, One Town: Leigh's Homes Explained
Leigh became one town in 1875, when the townships of Pennington, Westleigh and Bedford merged. You still see those names on street signs and in the WN7 postcode, which also covers Hope Carr, Landside, Low Common and Higher Folds.
The housing tells the story of the town's past. Leigh was known for spinning, weaving and silk. Rows of Victorian and Edwardian terraces were built for mill workers, and many still stand close to the centre. Several of the big red-brick mills have since been turned into flats. Around the edges, newer estates offer semis and detached family homes.
Each type brings its own job for our crew. Terraces mean steep stairs and front doors on the pavement. Mill flats mean lifts, long corridors and sometimes booked move-in slots. New-build homes mean fresh carpets and paintwork that we protect with runners and corner guards.
Most people moving within Leigh are families, from first-time buyers in a terrace to couples moving up to a bigger house further out. The local figures below give you house prices and school results if you are comparing parts of town.
The busway
Living Near The Leigh Guided Busway After Your Move
The busway opened on 3 April 2016 and gave Leigh a fast public transport link into Manchester. For many buyers it is the main reason to pick one street over another.
The V1 starts at Leigh bus station and joins the guided track at East Bond Street. It runs along the old railway line through Tyldesley to Newearth Road in Ellenbrook, then follows bus lanes beside the A580 through Worsley and Swinton into the city. Stops on the guided section include East Bond Street and Holden Road in Leigh, then Cooling Lane, Astley Street, Hough Lane, Sale Lane and Newearth Road.
- If your new home backs onto the busway, check where the lorry can stop: the guided track itself is for buses only
- Streets near busway stops can fill with parked cars on weekdays, so a Saturday move may be easier
- If you don't drive, you can travel ahead on the V1 while our crew brings your things
- Keep a box of kettle, mugs, chargers and toilet roll with you, not in the lorry
Leigh's nearest railway station is at Atherton, about three miles north. If rail matters to you, our page on moving to Atherton explains its two stations.
Parking
Leigh's L1, L2 And L3 Permit Zones On Moving Day
Wigan Council runs three controlled parking zones in Leigh. If your old or new address is in one, the lorry needs a plan.
| Zone | Some of the streets | Hours |
|---|---|---|
| L1 | Charles Street, Bedford Street, Bold Street, Church Street and others | 9am to 5pm, Monday to Saturday |
| L2 | Hanover Street, The Avenue, Westrees, Brookfield Street | 9am to 5pm, Monday to Saturday |
| L3 | Ledgard Avenue, Wintergreen Close | 5pm to 10pm on weekdays, 10am to 7pm at weekends |
L1 and L2 cover the working day, which is when a removal takes place. L3 is different: its hours fall in the evenings and at weekends, so a weekday daytime move there may not clash at all. Check the signs on your street, because the council's zone list is the final word.
Wigan Council issues resident, visitor and business permits through its parking service. Ask the parking team, well before the date, which permit or arrangement covers a removal lorry at your address. Most of Leigh sits outside the three zones. There, the challenge is the terraced streets near the town centre, where cars park nose to tail. Our advice is to let the street know your date early, so a space by your door is free when the lorry pulls in.
Canals and landmarks
Canal-Side Homes, Mills And Match Days In Leigh
Water shaped Leigh as much as cotton did. The Bridgewater Canal reached the town in 1795, and a branch of the Leeds and Liverpool Canal was cut to meet it at Leigh Bridge by 1820. Today the towpaths are popular for walks, and a number of homes face the water. If yours does, the front door may be on a narrow lane, with the road some way off. Tell us, and we will plan the carry and bring trolleys.
Leigh Spinners, one of the town's great mill buildings, still stands today. Nearby, Leigh Sports Village opened in 2008 with a stadium that holds around 12,000 people. On match and event days, the roads around it get much busier. If you live close by, check the fixture list before you fix your moving date.
To the south-west, Pennington Flash Country Park is a large lake formed by mining subsidence and is loved by birdwatchers. If your new home is on one of the lanes near the park, send us the exact address, as satnav can be vague on the smaller roads.
Extra help
What Leigh Families Most Often Add To A Move
A straight house move is where most Leigh jobs start. These are the extras people add most often, and where to read more about each one.
- A packing team for the day before, with all the boxes, paper and tape
- Storage in sealed containers when the dates of a chain don't line up
- Careful handling for an upright or grand, through our specialist piano movers
- Hired plastic crates if you would rather not collect cardboard
For the move itself, our house removals service page explains how our crew protects floors, wraps furniture and loads the lorry. If you are still choosing a date, our guide on what affects the cost of a removal shows how timing, access and volume change a quote.

Short Moves From Leigh To Its Neighbouring Towns
A lot of Leigh moves cross a nearby border rather than the country. North of the town, Hindley, on the Southport line, is another good-value Wigan borough town. Over the Bolton border, our Westhoughton guide covers the town by the M61. To the east, Walkden in Salford is reached along the A580 corridor. South, past Culcheth, lies the Warrington borough.

FAQs
Leigh House Moves: Your Questions Answered
Moving in or around Leigh? Ask us anything about the move.
My street is in Leigh's L1 or L2 zone. What do I do about the lorry?
Zones L1 and L2 run from 9am to 5pm, Monday to Saturday, which is when most removals happen. Wigan Council issues resident and visitor permits for these zones. Ask the council's parking team, well before the date, which permit or arrangement covers a removal lorry at your address. Tell us your street when you call and we will plan around the answer.
Why does it matter that Leigh has no railway station?
It means almost everything in Leigh moves by road, and the town's main roads carry a lot of traffic. We plan arrival times with that in mind. It also matters after you move: if you commute, the guided busway and the bus station are your main public transport links, so many buyers look for homes near a busway stop.
How far is Leigh from your depot?
Leigh is about 15 KM from our Broadheath depot in Altrincham, in a straight line. That is close enough for an early start and a full day of loading, driving and unloading without a rush.
Can you move furniture into a converted mill flat in Leigh?
Yes. Mill conversions often have lifts, long corridors and shared entrances, and some have rules on move-in times. Ask your management company for those rules and send them to us. We will measure large items against doors and lifts before the day.
Can you collect only some items and store the rest?
Yes. Some Leigh families move part of the house now and keep the rest in our sealed containers at the Broadheath depot until they are ready. There is no minimum term and access is by arrangement.
