Wilmslow, SK9

A Cheshire Town That People Move To From Far Away

Wilmslow is a busy market town in Cheshire East, in the SK9 postcode. It is about 11 miles south of Manchester and only 4 miles from Manchester Airport along the A538. The station has an hourly Avanti West Coast service to London Euston, plus local trains to Manchester, Stockport and the airport.

That mix of fast trains and a nearby airport draws people from a long way off. Many of the removals in Wilmslow we are asked about involve someone arriving from London, the south or overseas. Others are local families moving up a size within the town, or swapping a big house for a town-centre apartment.

CMR Relocation is based in Broadheath, Altrincham, about 12.1 km from Wilmslow in a straight line. We drive down the A538 past the airport, over the River Bollin and into the town. It is close enough that our crew knows the roads, and far enough out that we plan the timings properly.

Long-distance arrivals

Arriving In Wilmslow From London, The South Or Abroad

A long-distance move has more moving parts than a local one. These are the questions to settle early.

WhenWhat to sortWhy it matters
8 to 12 weeks outGet quotes and a survey, in person or by videoA long move needs a firm idea of volume before anyone can plan vehicles and days.
6 weeks outDecide whether you need storageCompletion dates often slip. A storage plan stops a gap becoming a crisis.
4 weeks outBook packing and agree the datesPacking a whole house takes time, and the best dates go first.

Storage While Your Wilmslow Purchase Completes

The most common problem on a long-distance move is timing. You have to leave the old home on one date, but the new one is not ready until later. It happens all the time when people buy in Wilmslow from somewhere else.

Our answer is our container storage near Wilmslow. Your goods are loaded straight from the lorry into sealed containers at our Broadheath depot. They stay there, secure and dry, until you are ready. There is no minimum term. Most people book for at least a month. You can arrange access if you need something out.

When the purchase completes, we bring everything to the new house. Our crew places furniture in the right rooms, and with our packing service puts the beds back up, so your first night feels like home.

Renting first while you get to know the area? We can deliver part of the load to the rental and keep the rest in storage until you buy.

Around the town

Wilmslow Streets, From The Town Centre To Lindow And Handforth

The town centre

Bank Square, Grove Street and Water Lane make up the shopping heart of Wilmslow. Apartments here are popular with downsizers and commuters who want to walk to the station. Parking is tight, so the loading point is the first thing we plan.

Family roads around the centre

Most of the town is made up of family homes with drives and gardens, from older houses to newer estates. Access is usually simple. Lofts and garages are where the hidden volume lives.

Lindow and the edges

Out towards Lindow Common and Lindow Moss, homes get larger and plots get bigger. Some have long drives and gates. We check the turn and the gate width on the survey.

Handforth and Styal

Wilmslow's area also takes in Handforth and Styal, each with its own parish council. Handforth has more modern estates. Styal is a small village by the River Bollin, near Quarry Bank, with narrower lanes.

Council rules

Parking A Removal Lorry Under Cheshire East Rules In Wilmslow

Wilmslow is not in Greater Manchester, so Manchester borough rules do not apply. Cheshire East Council sets parking rules here. Its guidance says it will not give a parking dispensation for moving house, because you can already park to load and unload.

That right has limits. If the kerb shows a loading ban, you cannot load there. Zigzags at crossings, bus stops, taxi bays, school markings and disabled bays are also off limits.

For homes on a drive, none of this matters. For town-centre flats, it can. If you live near the shops, we look at the street before the day and plan where the lorry will stand. Call us on 0161 478 3639 and we will talk it through.

FAQs

Relocating To Wilmslow: Common Questions

Moving in or around Wilmslow? Ask us anything about the move.

We are moving to Wilmslow from London. Can you collect from there?

Talk to us about it. Our own vehicles handle UK moves, and the quote depends on the size of the load and the dates. Many people moving a long way also need short-term storage, which we can provide at our Broadheath depot, about 12 km from Wilmslow.

Is Wilmslow in Greater Manchester or Cheshire?

Cheshire. Wilmslow is run by Cheshire East Council, although it sits right on the edge of Greater Manchester, close to Manchester Airport. That matters for parking rules, which are set by Cheshire East, not by a Manchester borough.

Will I need a council permit for the removal lorry?

Usually no. Cheshire East does not issue parking dispensations for moving house, because loading and unloading is already allowed. That does not cover places with loading restrictions, bus stops, taxi bays, zigzags, school markings or disabled bays. In the town centre those are more common, so we check the street first.

Can you move us into an apartment in the town centre?

Yes. Tell us if there is a lift, how big it is and whether it can be booked. We also need to know where the lorry can stop, as parking near Grove Street and Water Lane is busy. Some apartment blocks have their own rules on move times.

Our new house is not ready. Where do our things go?

Into sealed containers at our depot in Broadheath, Altrincham. There is no minimum term, and most people book for at least a month. When the keys arrive, we bring everything to the new house, and with our packing service we set the beds up too.
