Moving in Stockport

What Makes A Stockport Move Different From The Suburbs

Stockport is a town of hills. The old centre sits in a gorge where the Rivers Tame and Goyt meet to form the Mersey, and the streets climb steeply out of it on every side. That shapes almost every job we quote here. A lorry that parks at the bottom of a sloping terrace street gives the crew a harder carry than one that parks level with the front door.

Our removals in Stockport start with that kind of question. Where can the lorry stand? How far is it to the door? Are there steps up from the pavement? Is there a back entry we can use? Once we know, we can send the right size of crew and set an honest time for the day.

CMR Relocation has been moving homes since 2011. Our depot is at Broadheath, Altrincham, about 13.6 km from Stockport as the crow flies. The usual way over is the A560, which runs from Altrincham through Timperley, Gatley and Cheadle straight into Stockport. When that road is slow we use the M60 instead.

Know your street

Stockport Neighbourhoods And The Homes We Find There

The borough covers SK1 to SK8, but the town itself is a patchwork. Each part brings different homes, so each brings a different move.

AreaTypical homesWhat it means on moving day
Edgeley, Shaw Heath, Cale GreenRed-brick Victorian terraces, many with a back entrySteep stairs and tight turns. Parking on the street is often shared, so we plan where the lorry stands.
Heaton Moor, Heaton ChapelLarge Victorian and Edwardian semis and villasBig rooms, high ceilings and heavy old furniture. More wrapping and a bigger crew.
Davenport, Great Moor, OffertonInterwar and post-war semis, some newer estatesEasier access, often with a drive. Lofts and garages add volume people forget.
ReddishTerraces and semis, with some converted mill flatsA mix of stairs and lifts. Mill flats need a loading point and lift booked.
Town centreFlats and apartments near Merseyway and the UnderbanksVery little on-street parking. The loading point is the first thing we sort.

This is a rough guide, not a rule. A street in Edgeley can hold a semi, and a road in the Heatons can hold a terrace. That is why we look at the house itself, either in person or by video, before we give you a price.

Victorian terraces

Getting Furniture Out Of A Stockport Terrace In One Piece

The terraced streets around Edgeley and Shaw Heath were built for mill and hat workers well over a century ago. Nobody built them with a modern corner sofa in mind. Front doors open straight onto the pavement or a tiny yard. Stairs rise steeply from just inside the door, and many have a tight turn at the top.

Here is how our crew handles it:

  • We measure the stair and the turn before moving day, not on it
  • With our packing service, beds and flat-pack wardrobes are taken apart in the room and rebuilt at the new house
  • Heavy pieces go down the stairs with two people, one below taking the weight
  • Floor runners and stair film go down first, as the old carpet often stays for the buyer
  • Boxes are kept to a weight one person can carry safely on a steep stair

If you are moving into a terrace, the same rules apply in reverse. Tell us about the new house too. A sofa that came out of a semi in Davenport may not go into a two-up two-down in Edgeley, and it is better to know that before it leaves.

Our tips on packing boxes the right way are worth a read if you plan to pack yourself. Small, firm boxes are much easier on a steep stair than big, soft ones.

Parking

How Stockport Council Parking Dispensations Work For A Move

Stockport Metropolitan Borough Council handles parking on the borough's roads. This is how its process works, step by step.

  1. 1

    Check the kerb

Look outside your old and new homes. No lines and room to park? You may not need anything. Yellow lines, permit bays or the town centre zone mean you probably do.

  2. 2

    Fill in the online form

The council's dispensation form asks for the vehicle type and registration, the reason, what you will do, the dates and the times. We give you our lorry's details.

  3. 3

    Allow time

The council says it replies within 10 working days and that a charge may apply. Domestic removals are one of the reasons it will consider.

  4. 4

    On the day

We park where the dispensation allows and keep the pavement clear. Double yellow lines in the borough apply all day, every day, unless a sign says otherwise.

The pay-and-display zone around the town centre runs Monday to Saturday, 6am to 6pm, and the council says on-street space there is very limited. If you live in a permit area, note that Stockport stopped issuing visitor scratch cards, so a removal lorry cannot simply use a visitor pass. Ask the council's parking team if you are unsure which rules cover your road. We are happy to talk it through on the phone first.

Who moves here

Who Is Moving In And Out Of Stockport

Stockport draws a wide mix of people. The station is a major stop on the West Coast Main Line, with fast trains to Manchester and London. That makes it popular with commuters. First-time buyers often start in a town centre flat or a terrace in Edgeley. Families tend to look at the bigger semis in Heaton Moor and Davenport.

Many of the moves we quote here are short hops. Someone in a terrace needs one more bedroom, so they move a mile up the hill. Others move further south, into Cheadle Hulme or Bramhall, for a bigger garden. Some are leaving the area altogether, and a few are moving abroad.

For a short local move, we can often load and unload on the same morning. For a bigger family house, our crew may pack the day before and move the next day. If you are heading overseas, our European removals cover France, Spain, Germany and the Netherlands.

Whatever the size, the first step is the same. Tell us what you have and where it is going. Our free quote will list what is included, so you can compare it fairly. Our guide on how to compare removal quotes explains what to look for.

FAQs

Stockport Moves: What People Ask Us

Moving in or around Stockport? Ask us anything about the move.

Do I need a parking dispensation for a removal in Stockport?

Not always. If the street outside has no yellow lines and space to park, we can usually load from the road. If the house is on a double yellow line, in a resident permit area or near the town centre pay-and-display zone, Stockport Council takes requests for a dispensation or bay suspension through an online form. Domestic removals are one of the reasons it lists. The council says it replies within 10 working days, so apply at least three weeks before the move.

My terrace has a steep, narrow stair. Will our sofa and wardrobe fit?

Most things that went in will come out, but we check first. On the survey we measure the stair, the turn at the top and the front door. Beds and wardrobes that come apart can be taken down in the room, if that is part of your quote. If a sofa has no chance of making the turn, we will tell you before moving day, not on it.

Can you move me out of a flat in Stockport town centre?

Yes. Flats bring their own questions: is there a lift, can we book it, and where can the lorry stop? The town centre has very little on-street parking, so we sort the loading point with you and the building manager well in advance.

How far is Stockport from your depot?

Our depot is at Broadheath in Altrincham, about 13.6 km from Stockport in a straight line. By road we usually come along the A560 through Timperley and Gatley, or round the M60. It is close enough that the crew can start at your door early in the morning.

Can you store our furniture if the new house is not ready?

Yes. We keep your things in sealed containers at our Broadheath depot. There is no minimum term, and you can get access by arrangement. Most people who use it book for at least a month while a chain settles.
