The client
Who AVEVA Are And Why They Needed Us
AVEVA is a British software company, with its head office in Cambridge. It makes engineering and industrial software used to design and run plants, ships and power stations. Since January 2023 it has been part of Schneider Electric.
AVEVA has a base in Manchester. In October 2011 it bought the LFM software division of Z+F UK, and said it would set up a 3D data capture centre in the city. AVEVA asked CMR Relocation to help with its Manchester office space.
The work started in January 2012. It was not a simple move from A to B. AVEVA needed new furniture bought and fitted, existing furniture moved around the building, and part of the business moved out to other premises.
The brief
What AVEVA Asked CMR Relocation To Do
The brief came in three parts. Each one needed a different skill, and all three had to fit around a working office.
Source extra furniture
Add to AVEVA's furniture with new pieces, including seating for the reception area and the boardroom.
Install it
Deliver and build the new furniture in the Manchester office, to the agreed floor plan.
Move furniture inside the building
Relocate some of the existing furniture to new spots within AVEVA's own premises.
Move part of the business out
Move one part of the business, with its furniture, to other premises.
How it went
A Late Floor Plan Change And A Broken Lift
Two things did not go to plan, which is normal on a real job.
First, the floor plan changed at the last minute. The office had a raised floor, with power and data in floor boxes set into it. When desks move, the floor boxes often have to move with them. So our team lifted and moved some of those boxes to suit the new layout, without stopping the job.
Second, the access lift broke. On an office job, the lift is how everything gets in and out. We changed the plan on the day and carried on. The project still finished on time, with very little downtime for AVEVA's staff.
That is why we plan every office job with room for something to go wrong. Our space planning work and move-day labour crews are built around that idea.
In the client's words
What AVEVA's Facilities Manager Said
"We have recently used CMR for office moves and furniture procurement and installation for our Manchester office space. In January 2012 they managed the installation of new furniture, including the unplanned moving of some floor boxes within the raised floor to accommodate a last minute change to floor plan layouts. They also relocated some existing furniture within our building and completely moved part of the business and furniture to other premises.
This work went extremely well and we found CMR to be very efficient, friendly and professional, with a versatile skill set. We were extremely satisfied with the high standards of service and professionalism we receive from CMR and will not hesitate to call on them again in the future."
What you can take from it
Lessons From The AVEVA Job For Your Office
Plan for change. Floor plans often move late. Ask your removal firm whether it can move floor boxes and rebuild desks on the day, not just carry them.
Use one firm for furniture and the move. When the same team buys, builds and moves the furniture, nothing falls between two suppliers. See our office furniture service and our business removals in Manchester.
Check the building. Lifts, loading bays and access times all matter. Our office move checklist covers what to ask your landlord. You can also read the other business moves we have written up, including the Z+F UK relocation.
